John Hazard – “A Cinematographer’s Journey into Plant Intelligence”

John will highlight moments from shooting films for National Geographic and Discovery Channel that includes a special twist: he will describe his personal independent film project that includes Terence McKenna’s last interview on video, and his conversations with Jeremy Narby, whose books “The Cosmic Serpent” and “Intelligence in Nature” point toward a radical re-definition of sentience in the natural world.

Richard Mandelbaum – “Plant Intelligence and the Future of Herbalism”

Modern scientific research is now confirming what indigenous cultures around the world have known for millennia or more: that plants are fully aware of their surroundings and as responsive as animals to the world around them – in some cases even more so. In this talk Richard will guide us through some of the more recent scientific findings and how that intersects and interlays with traditional views of plants. We will also explore how discoveries around Plant Communication and the interconnectedness of plants through the mycorrhizal network in the soil are upending our notions not only of plants but of ourselves as well. Modern Western culture trains us to think of ourselves as individuals, but recent research on both animals and plants is now challenging us to replace the Self with Community as the basic unit of Life. This has profound impact on how we view not only our health and well-being, but ultimately our relationships with all life and the Earth itself.

Data Garden is a journal, record label and events producer encouraging the discovery of electronic music through the windows of history, science and community. We research the heritage of primitive electronic art and explore the synthesis of biological and digital technologies as a channel of human expression.

“Sonifying plants through technology called MIDI Sprout gives us insights into their world as they observe us through the process of biofeedback. Plants outfitted with sensors are essentially antennae that express the energy shifts in their environment. These changes are turned into music as they are filtered through synthesizers.”
